Course content

INTRODUCTION: THE LIVING BREATH

A short introduction to my Pranayama series about the importance of breathing exercises.

LESSON 1: GROUNDING WITH THE BREATH

Calm the mind and feel a sense of grounding with this simple breathing technique. Connect with your breath and notice the quality of your attention. Start to refine both of these. The mind rests at the place where the body touches the earth, sensing this grounding flow of energy deepen and widen into the earth.

LESSON 2: SAMA VRITTI

Breathing and meditation techniques to reduce stress and anxiety. We find a quality of ‘smoothness or sameness’ to the breath to calm the fluctuations of the mind. Practice anywhere, anytime!

LESSON 3: FULL YOGIC BREATH

Great as a preparation for meditation we learn to breath in the three different sections of the torso and increase the oxygen levels in the body. Activating the parasympathetic nervous system to encourage a calmer more balanced you.

LESSON 4: UJJAYI (THE VICTORIOUS BREATH)

Meditation and yoga practices require us to learn the art of Ujjayi Pranayama. Often this sounds loud, but here we bring the Ujjayi back to a state of calm so that your practice can be meditative. Ujjayi brings heat, soothes the nervous system and promotes healing in the body.

LESSON 5: SURYA BHEDA (SECRET OF THE SUN)

Meditation preparation is perfect with Surya Bheda. Also known as ‘sun penetration’ this breathing technique activates the Pingala Nadi, increases heat within the body and allows us to shine in our own inner light.

LESSON 6: CHANDRA BHEDA (MOON ENERGY PENETRATION)

Reduce stress, tension and anxiety with this breathing technique to calm the mind into meditation. Chandra Bheda also helps cool the body and can help lower high blood pressure. Traditionally practiced on alternate days from Surya Bheda (lesson 5) and is great for preparing meditation.

LESSON 7: NAHI SHODHANA (ENERGY CHANNEL PENETRATION)

Relieve stress and depression, calm the mind of anxiety and improve blood circulation and digestion with Kapalabhati pranayama. ‘Skull shining breath’ works at purifying the nerves, activating the frontal lobe of the brain and cleansing the nadis (energy channels). Practice morning and evening.

LESSON 8: KAPALABHATI (SKULL SHINING)

Relieve stress and depression, calm the mind of anxiety and improve blood circulation and digestion with Kapalabhati pranayama. ‘Skull shining breath’ works at purifying the nerves, activating the frontal lobe of the brain and cleansing the nadis (energy channels). Practice morning and evening.

LESSON 9: BHASTRIKA (BELLOWS OF THE BLACKSMITH)

Yoga for energy and strengthening the lungs. Prepare the mind for meditation, strengthen the respiratory and digestive systems all while oxygenating your blood with Bhastrika. Increase the vitality of all the organs and tissues with ‘Breath of Fire’ and feel its calming effects on the mind.

LESSON 10: BRAMMARI PRANAYAMA (THE HUMMING BEE BREATH)

Perfect for entering meditation, calm the mind and soothe the nervous system with Brammari (Bhramari) ‘the goddess of the bee’ breathing technique. For those who suffer from anxiety or anxious (rajasic) depression, this practice quiets the mind within a few breaths.
